Spokan Falls, known as the "Capital of the Inland Empire," was named after the Spokan Indians and the picturesque falls. In 1891, the name was changed to Spokane. The town thrived as a result of the abundant waters of the Spokane River, which powered saw and grain mills, and lured major transcontinental railways to Spokane in 1881. In 1889, a fire destroyed the downtown area, but like a forest after a fire, the town enjoyed growth and resurgence soon after. Spokane would attract people as diverse as Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, Calamity Jane, Billy Sunday, and Charles Lindbergh. Easterners found that its four seasons and profusion of scenic city parks gave them a place to ensure their destiny.

Coast Starlight in Santa Barbara

Coast Starlight in Santa Barbara

After a Jet Blue flight from Salt Lake City to Long Beach and visiting relatives in Southern California, my wife and I took the Coast Starlight to Portland, Cascade Talgo to Seattle and the Empire Builder to Spokane.

This is the rear half of our Coast Starlight train as it sits at the Santa Barbara station waiting for departure time.

I was hoping a high school friend who now lives in Santa Barbara would make it to the station but he did not get my message in time so I enjoyed the fresh are before our departure.

Another from a short arial series I took while flying from Seattle to Spokane. Im sure these are all white now but the color range and clarity was wonderful at the time of this flight. Taken in late summer. Cascades are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and likely several summit seen here may be dormant volcanoes.

This landmark collection features essays by eight noted national and regional scholars, such as Donald W. Meinig, John Fahey, Carlos A. Schwantes, Henry Matthews, Clifford E. Trafzer, and Harvey S. Rice.
"Spokane and the Inland Empire" outlines the region’s historical geographic systems, Palouse tribal history, characteristics of prehistoric Plateau Indian dwellings, a century of Columbia Plateau agriculture, Spokane’s bitter labor disputes that occurred prior to America’s entry into World War I, the exceptional architecture of Spokane’s Kirtland Cutter, and more. This new edition has been revised from the original volume published in 1991. Extensive illustrations supplement the text.
